Beginner Training Plan
Your first lesson
We’ll start off with intros, warm-ups and pointers on footwear and how to play pickleball safely. We’ll then cover the grip and ‘Ready’ position. We’ll then move on to playing at the Kitchen / Non-Volley Zone without and then with paddles. Through these activities I also share important facts about the Kitchen / Non-volley Zone before ending with a Dinking game.
Lesson 2-3
For lessons 2 and 3, we’ll cover the forehand and backhand ground strokes and also the mechanics and the rules of serving and the serve return (2 bounce rule). I’ll also teach you how to score and we’ll end off with a ‘skinny singles’ game so you can put everything you learned into practice.
Lesson 4-10
For the next few lessons, we’ll consolidate what you have learnt in the first 3 lessons and also introduce the third shot drop and drive. We’ll also learn the block volley and also the key strategies and tactics for doubles play. We will do all these using demos and actual practice but also through drills and gameplay to incorporate all the techniques and strategies you have learned. We’ll also provide advice on paddle and shoe selection and suggest options for Open Play near your home or workplace if needed.
Lesson 11+
At this point you should be able to play pickleball with friends and family competently and confidently. Now we’ll focus on improving your shot accuracy and placement. We’ll also work on adding power and spin (topspin & slice) to your shots like the serve, return of serve, groundstrokes and dinks to increase your effectiveness on the court. We’ll also introduce advanced shots like the offensive lob, resets, ATP and ERNE to provide even more weapons in your pickleball arsenal and prepare you for copetititive play. We’ll also provide advice on getting a DUPR rating and playing in leagues and tournaments if needed.
